Travel alert for Thailand
September 27, 2006

Elements of the Thai military staged a military coup on September 19, 2006, and declared martial law. The situation will remain uncertain for the days ahead, and the potential for violent confrontations exists. Canadians should stay away from concentrations of military personnel, all areas of military activity and avoid any demonstrations which may occur.  This advice applies throughout the provinces as well as to the capital, Bangkok.  Canadians should also closely monitor the situation and heed the instructions of local authorities.

Effective September 28, 2006, all domestic and international flights to and from Bangkok will permanently shift from the Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang) to the new Suvarnabhumi Airport. Travellers should expect delays and disruptions in the initial weeks following the opening, as all systems may not be fully functional. Travellers should also allow for extra time to arrive at the new airport, as it is located approximately 30 km east of Bangkok.
