Alberta Computers for Schools Celebrates 150,000
September 14, 2011

Computers for Schools is a national program that collects and refurbishes used computers – at little or no cost – to schools, libraries, and other learning-based organizations.

Alberta Computers for Schools is the “delivery agency” for the program in this province, but is not formally a part of the federal or provincial government, although it is funded by both. The Alberta program alone refurbishes and distributes between 13 and 14 thousand computers annually.

In September Lee Richardson joined Alberta Computers for Schools in celebrating their achievement of distributing over 150,354 computers and 5,902 printers to educational institutions across the province.

The following are the remarks given by Lee Richardson at the Alberta Computers for Schools event celebrating over 150,000 computers being delivered to Alberta education institutions.

“As the Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre, I am very proud to congratulate Alberta Computers for Schools on the distribution of the 150,000th computer in the province and on today’s opening of a new refurbishing shop in Calgary. These are great achievements.

Since Computers for Schools began in 1993, more than 1.1 million refurbished computers have been donated to Canadian schools, libraries, non-profit learning organizations and Aboriginal communities. The Government of Canada is proud to support the Computers for Schools program, which helps Canadians benefit from developing the computer literacy skills that are critical to preparing for the digital economy.

Today’s milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the many donors, partners and volunteers who share in the government’s commitment to providing students with access to information technology that will enhance their learning experience and help them succeed in the knowledge-based economy.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, please accept my most sincere congratulations on Alberta’s remarkable success with Computers for Schools.”
