Protecting the Health and Safety of Canadians
October 03, 2011

Our Government received a strong mandate to complete our economic recovery and protect the health and safety of Canadian families.

And that is exactly what our Government is doing by ensuring that Canadian families have confidence in the products they use every day. Since taking office, we have implemented a number of measures to protect Canadians from hazardous substances.

In June 2011 our Government passed the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) into law, the first major comprehensive update in 40 years, allowing us to remove hazardous substances from shelves to protect families.  CCPSA will allow our Government to protect the health and safety of Canadians by addressing or preventing dangers posed by consumer products by heightening the industry’s responsibility to ensure that they are not marketing potentially dangerous consumer products.

And now in October, our Government announced that we will reinvest in the Chemicals Management Plan, benefiting Canadian consumers and families, while also protecting the environment. The Chemicals Management Plan was announced in 2006 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Taking action now will significantly reduce future costs associated with water treatment, clean-up of contaminated sites, and treating illnesses related to chemical exposure. It will improve Canadians' quality of life, and better protect our environment.

Our Government will continue to ensure that the products Canadians use do not pose a hazard to their family or the environment.
