Over the past five years the federal government, through the Gas Tax Fund (GTF) and the Public Transit Fund (PTF) has provided over $237 million in funding to The City of Calgary for investments in public transit and waste recycling projects. This federal funding has helped fund the:
- Expansion of the Northwest and Northeast legs of our Light Rail Transit system;
- Establishment of a bus rapid transit service in Southeast Calgary;
- Refurbishment of light rail vehicles and buses;
- Remediation of landfill sites;
- Purchase of community shuttle buses;
- Purchase of seven new light rail vehicles; and
- Refurbishment of light rail transit stations.
In our recent Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada announced $12 billion in new funding for roads, bridges, sewers and other infrastructure projects across our country. Our government will work with the City of Calgary to ensure that this investment focuses on the needs of Calgarians, supports economic growth, employment in Calgary, and bolsters our long-term economic health.
This investment will create jobs and economic activity today while ensuring the infrastructure needs of Calgarians are met for years to come.
