2007: A year of accomplishments…

In 2007 our government continued to provide strong leadership for a better Canada. Legislative highlights include:

• Budget 2007 and the Fall Fiscal Update, which cut 28 different taxes, including a reduction in the GST to 5%, and reduced the national debt by $19.2;
• Bill C-2, a comprehensive Tackling Violent Crime bill that raises the age of protection, introduces mandatory prison sentences for those who commit gun crimes and stiffens the penalties on impaired drivers and dangerous offenders.
• The Building Canada infrastructure plan: $33 billion in new funding for roads, mass transit, green energy and other municipal priorities;
• Several Democratic Reform proposals including action on Senate reform and, in recognition of our growing population, increasing Alberta’s representation in the House of Commons.
