Results in the battle against gangs and organized crime…
October 29, 2009
Constituents frequently ask me what actions our government is taking to get tough on criminals and help keep our streets safe. Despite our minority status in the House of Commons and Senate, I’m pleased to report our government is making progress on the legislative front.

Important legislation that has been enacted this year include:
  • Bill C-14, which toughened the penalties for murders and weapons offences linked to organized crime and;
  • Bill C-25, which limits credit for time spent in pre-sentencing custody thereby ensuring that if criminals do the crime, they do the time.

Bills that have received approval from the House of Commons and are now before the Senate include:
  • Bill C-15, which mandates minimum penalties for serious drug offences;
  • Bill C-26, which toughens the penalties for theft of a motor vehicle and;
  • Bill C-42, which restricts the use of conditional sentences for serious offences.

Our government is committed to reforming our justice system and will
continue to move forward with an aggressive legislative agenda to deter crime, punish criminals and keep Canadians safe.
