Canada’s New Government Acts Quickly In Response to Terrorist Threat

In response to recent major counter terrorism operation in the United Kingdom (UK), Canada’s New Government has taken swift action increase security at airports to protect Canadians. Actions include:
  • Effective immediately, all liquids and gels in containers of any kind are banned from all carry-on luggage and cannot be carried on aircraft by passengers;
  • Using the Government Operations Centre to coordinate the response of federal departments and agencies and to communicate with provinces and territories throughout the day as needed; and
  • Working closely with security agencies in the United States, the UK and with other allies to implement heightened security measures.
Today’s actions build on other steps taken by Canada’s new Government to fight terrorism and protect the safety and security of Canadians including:
  • Allocating $101 million to provide side arms and training for our border officers;
  • Investing $303 million for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority; and
  • Committing $95 million for new measures to strengthen passenger rail and urban transit security.
